The project is located in the city of Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, that lies between the Yinshan Mountains and the Yellow River. The area is a plain topography and is situated north-west of the old city, where the new city is developing. The project area is 58,531sqm. The construction area is 49,316sqm divided into the three main functions required. The Cultural Center is a modern and comprehensive building and it is designed to reflect the historical roots of the Mongolian soul. In fact its aim is to remind and interpret the ethnical, folkloristic, artistic and social values of the Region.
The particular location of the area, situated in a context of expansion, has suggested a design that has the task of setting the tone for future development. This approach will succeed in turning the new Cultural Center into a recognizable image for Hohhot, a point of attraction for the whole city. The Cultural Center wants to show Mongolian traditional styles and structures integrated with a contemporary architectural language, thus creating a totally brand new mix that reflects the melting pot of the 36 different ethnic groups who live in the city – Mongolian, Han, Manchu, Hui, Tibetan, Dawoer, Elunchun, Ewenke, Korean, to name but a few. The Center building embodies the regional characteristics, reinterpreted using a modern point of view, which is fundamental in meeting today’s needs and to inspire future development.
